Epilepsy in the classroom

What should you do with technology in the classroom if one of your students can't even sit in front of the computer? Epileptic students may not be able to because it could cause a seizure. As a teacher you can not discriminate against certain students with this kind of problem because they may not be able to sit in front of a computer. And they have every right to do what the rest of the class does and to learn in the same ways. Check out this website for more details: http://www.epilepsy.org.uk/info/employees/computers

  1. The bright lights and fast movements are what cause people with epilepsy to have seizures. A simple tool is to dim the lights on the computer for a start, and allow the child to work with a slower computer program that is directed toward slower moving graphics etc. There is also programs that are all audio. The child wouldn't necessarily have to sit and look at a screen, there are programs that can provide verbal cues to assist the child in their learning with technology. (Vicki Legler)

  2. "Anti-glare screens can help to reduce the glare that comes from computer screens. However, they do not reduce the flicker rate, so they would not be of specific benefit to you if you have photosensitive epilepsy." http://www.epilepsy.org.uk/info/employees/computers
